After a heated debate with his third grade teacher about whether he deserved to miss recess as a punishment, a young Mr. Morse was told “you should be a lawyer for the mob!” Confused about what a lawyer and the mob were, Mr. Morse’s parents explained that a lawyer was someone with special training that helps citizens understand society’s rules (while neglecting to explain the mob). Years later, this explanation of a lawyer’s role in our society motivated Jonathan L. Morse to become an attorney.
JLM Law Group was founded by Mr. Morse with one goal – helping the business community in Detroit and across Michigan. Mr. Morse has prioritized helping businesses since the beginning of his career. Before attending law school, Mr. Morse promoted U.S. exportation at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the U.S. Commercial Service, the trade promotion arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce. After learning about export promotion, Mr. Morse took that experience in-house to a Michigan manufacturer to boost international sales. Collectively, between his studies and work experience, Mr. Morse lived in South America for two years and speaks Spanish fluently.
Before founding the JLM Law Group, Mr. Morse gained experience in a law firm setting where he represented purchasers and sellers in mergers and acquisitions, general business transactions, and commercial real property transactions. Regarding mergers and acquisitions, Mr. Morse facilitated equity transactions as well as the purchase and sale of all or substantially all of a business’s assets. Respecting general business transactions, Mr. Morse dealt with singular asset and product line purchases and sales, in addition to evaluating, negotiating and drafting various commercial contracts, including, without limitation, intellectual property agreements and licenses, construction agreements, non-disclosure agreements, employment agreements, and independent contractor agreements. Relating to commercial real property transactions, Mr. Morse handled real estate purchases and sales, commercial leases, and solar lease agreements.
Since founding the JLM Law Group, Mr. Morse continues to focus his practice on transactional business and commercial real property matters, as well as general commercial contracts and providing outside general counsel services. The JLM Law Group is proud to assist entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses as well as investment companies and multifaceted businesses. Notable transactions the JLM Law Group has facilitated recently include a $14 Million real estate investment deal, where Mr. Morse represented multiple investors in the formation of company used to purchase various retail locations for commercial leasing. Additionally, Mr. Morse represented a capital investment company in a budgeted $8.5 – $15 Million joint venture, where he formed two joint venture limited liability companies; one used for acquiring real property and developing it for cannabis growing and processing operations, and another for managing such operations. This included facilitating the purchase of 127 acres of unimproved real property to construct an industrial park for growing and processing cannabis.
Admitted to practice law in both Michigan and Wisconsin, Mr. Morse received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School on academic scholarship. During his legal education, Mr. Morse earned credit towards his law degree as an Extern in the Wisconsin Supreme Court and with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Additionally, Mr. Morse assisted the Legal Action of Wisconsin’s Migrant Project, helping migrant workers understand their rights in the U.S., as well as the University of Wisconsin’s Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic, providing legal services to nascent entrepreneurs and early-stage companies.
Mr. Morse is an Of Counsel Attorney to The Allen Law Group, P.C., where he works on projects in specialized areas of the law and assists with general legal matters on an as-needed basis. Mr. Morse serves on the Board of Directors of two Detroit-based non-profit organizations, the Coalition On Temporary Shelter (C.O.T.S.) and the Matrix Theatre Company. Additionally, Mr. Morse provides pro-bono legal services and in-person volunteer assistance for the Urban Development Corporation, revitalizing impoverished areas of Detroit.
